Lakelse Lake Geothermal Project in Terrace, BC

6/25/2013

LL Geothermal, of whom Borealis is a Joint Venture partner, obtained a geothermal exploration permit [GP2014001] for ~2,865 hectares in the Lakelse Lake area from the Ministry of Energy and Mines on January 21, 2014. (For specific details, please click here )
[Parcel GP2014001]
Our view is that the geological environment in the Lakelse Lake area is highly conducive to developing a geothermal project.  Our initial exploration and analysis suggests that we have the requisite subsurface features to continuously supply, and replenish, high temperature brines that would support ongoing power generation.
As of June 1st, 2014, we are currently entering into the initial phase of our surface exploration program.
Dependent on successful exploration results, the ultimate goal of the project is to develop and put into service a +/- 15 MW (net) geothermal power plant.

Equinox Summit 2030 Mapping Project

6/24/2013

Craig Dunn of Borealis Geopower was pleased to be involved (as an expert in Geopower energy development)  in the first ever Equinox Summit:  Energy 2030. The forum was led by the Waterloo Global Science Initiative and was a multinational, multigenerational, and multidisciplinary collaboration between scientists, policy experts, entrepreneurs, and a forum of future leaders from across the world. Over five days, summit participants shortlisted the most promising energy technologies for the generation, distribution, and storage of electricity. Then, they outlined a roadmap to their implementation in the decades ahead. Their recommendations for investment and focus culminated in the Equinox Blueprint: Energy 2030.
The outcome was the Equinox Blueprint: Energy 2030– released in February 2012, which helped to benchmark the current state of electricity generation, distribution, and storage around the world. It helped to detail a an energy ‘ecosystem’ point-of-view to approaching possible, lower carbon technologies; potential pathways to help advance research, development and implementation of long-term energy solutions; and technical details that help convey the complexities, challenges and opportunities posed by a few transitional technologies and systems.
The Equinox summit then launched a year of collaborative activities through which Summit participants continue to engage a broader community of thought leaders and innovators in refining and taking action on the ideas within the Equinox Blueprint. TheEnergy 2030 Mapping Project, which includes Borealis’ Optimized Geothermal Exploration program is Forum-led initiative that aims to visualize scalable practices and approaches that align with recommendations and strategies in the Energy 2030 Equinox Blueprint, worldwide on a virtual map. Borealis’ Optimized Geothermal Exploration Project is featured in the mapping project.
The Optimized Geothermal Exploration Project:
Canada’s Geothermal energy industry made a big-step forward with a $2.4 million investment by Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) in Calgary-based Borealis GeoPower’s optimal geothermal exploration project. Borealis GeoPower’s optimized geothermal exploration methodology is a carefully ordered set of processes and technologies that builds up an increasingly accurate picture of a geothermal resource, allowing the drilling of production wells precisely where they have the highest probability of hitting commercially-viable amounts of hot water. The program involves cutting-edge exploration techniques and innovative sub-surfacing reservoir modeling to help reduce the overall risk associated with exploration drilling.
Borealis GeoPower Inc. is a private Canadian corporation focused on developing high temperature geothermal energy projects. Established in 2007, it is currently working on geothermal projects in Western Canada. Consortium partners on the Optimized Exploration project are the Kitselas First Nation and Enbridge.
Location:  Borealis Geopower is located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.  The Optimized Geothermal Exploration program would be applied to a project at Lakelse Lake near Terrace, British Columbia.
Thanks again to WGSI and the organizers of the Equinox Summit for all their hard work on this and future projects.
