GREEN PARTY LEADER PROMOTES BC’S IMMENSE GEOTHERMAL POTENTIAL

The Green Party has set its sights on BC becoming a ‘clean tech powerhouse’ and Borealis is proud to announce that geothermal is turning out to be a big part of that discussion, as it should with BC’s immense amount of geothermal potential.
The Green Party Leader, Jane Sterk, commented that “The Green Party believes we can be a clean tech powerhouse. In terms of our renewable energy strategies, we have geothermal potential … We are the only jurisdiction in the Ring of Fire that doesn’t have geothermal power in place.”
And she’s right: of all the countries located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, developed or developing, Canada is the last country left to jump on board and use the naturally occurring heat underneath our feet to create our own power.
Stephen Grasby from the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) and Alison Thompson from the industry association, the Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (CanGEA), also provided input and comments to the report. Alison was quoted as saying “On the government’s part, I think there is a perception that geothermal is risky. That it is uneconomic…. It’s not a fringe resource. It’s unbelievable we haven’t done anything with it. … It’s competitive around the world. There is no reason to believe it wouldn’t be competitive in British Columbia’s open market as well.”
