BOREALIS HIRING FOR WELL-SITE GEOLOGIST ROLE

Borealis Geothermal is seeking an experienced well-site geologist with a passion for geothermal energy.

Title: Well-Site Geologist
Location: Office-based position in Calgary, Alberta, with fieldwork in Terrace, British Columbia
Start Date: TBD

Borealis Geothermal is searching for a wellsite geologist to assist with the drilling of temperature gradient and geothermal wells at their M’deek Project, near Terrace, BC this fall. We are looking for a range of candidates with either limited wellsite experience or many years of experience.
 
The geothermal wellsite geologist will serve as a representative for Borealis at the drilling site and will communicate company directives for drilling operations, including maintaining safe work practices in accordance with WorkSafeBC standards. The wellsite geologist will provide on-site supervision of drilling operations, collect and log cuttings, oversee/conduct geothermal well testing and sampling, and write regular progress reports. Additionally, coordination and supervision of vendors performing downhole surveys, acoustic logs, and well testing may be required.  Key responsibilities will include communicating with drillers, assessing drilling progress, gathering samples, logging data, providing geologic guidance and interpretations, reporting to management, and submitting reports to the regulator.

Responsibilities include:
  • Supervision of drilling operations onsite for up to 12 hr shifts and on-call as needed, working together with other wellsite geologists and team members.
  • Log cuttings including parameters such as rock type, mineral composition, texture, hydrothermal alteration, veins, methylene blue analysis, etc.
  • Assess for indications of a geothermal reservoir and communicate with drillers and drilling engineer.
  • Log daily drilling activities and maintain a consistent digital report of well history.
  • Work as part of a team to help analyze drilling results and guide the drilling campaign.
  • Communicate clearly and directly with drilling contractors on program objectives and procedures.
  • Write reports on project progress as needed to management, the technical team, and regulators.

Requirements:
Education/Certification
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geology or equivalent.
  • Obtained/eligible for G.I.T. or P.Geo status with EGBC.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a driving record acceptable to our company’s auto insurance carrier.
Remote Work Abilities
  • The ability to work remotely on a rotational schedule for weeks at a time (accommodation and per diem provided) as well as in an office environment.
  • The ability to navigate and work in remote field locations and work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
  • The ability to periodically lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to safely operate both on and off-road vehicles.
Skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to prepare reports and proposals.
  • Able to recognize, control, and communicate safety or environmental hazards.
  • Ability to properly use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures.
  • Demonstration of independent work and excellent technical communication.
  • Ability to effectively make critical, time sensitive decisions.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Programs including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as Dropbox.

Additional preferred skills, but not required:
  • Experience/familiarity with logging igneous and metamorphic lithologies.
  • Experience as a wellsite geologist and/or previous work on other geothermal projects.
  • Experience conducting geophysical well logging.
  • Experience with report/permitting submissions to the BC ER (formerly the BC OGC).
  • Experience with ArcGIS and/or Leapfrog Software.
  • Valid well service blowout prevention certificate, second-line supervisor certificate, or other well control certificate.
  • Valid Level 1 First Aid Training or higher.
