BOREALIS HIRING FOR GEOPHYSICIST ROLE

Borealis Geothermal is seeking an experienced geophysicist. Fault stability/geomechanics specialty is of interest.

Title: Geophysics Specialist
Location: Calgary, AB with fieldwork in British Columbia
Start Date: TBD

Borealis Geothermal is a geothermal exploration and development company focused on developing moderate-temperature geothermal projects throughout western Canada. This position requires close collaboration with the geoscience team and is ideal for geophysicists with a broad knowledge of geophysical techniques, especially related to fracture-controlled geothermal systems. Experience in the investigation and delineation of natural geothermal resources across a wide range of geological settings, including both hard-rock and sedimentary environments, is also a component of the role.

Responsibilities include:
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and all applicable regulations
  • Advance proprietary technology and build technical geoscientific capacity
  • Contributing to full-cycle project management for exploration programs (including permitting, procurement, fieldwork, data processing, analysis and interpretation)
  • Generate, test, and refine conceptual models of geothermal plays, and produce reports and publications substantiating geoscientific advances
  • Provide a critical evaluation of the cost/benefit of exploration and research techniques
  • Identify prospective opportunities for business development and consulting projects
  • Provide technical assistance for non-geoscientific endeavours (regulatory, operational, etc.)
  • Generate communications and marketing materials to convey complex geoscientific concepts, reporting to stakeholders and government agencies
  • Mentor and direct the progress of geoscience interns

Requirements:
  • A University degree in geophysics
    • preferably a master’s or PhD, or
    • equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to work with (or readily learn) geophysical processing software (ArcGIS, Leapfrog, Oasis Montaj, etc.)
  • Demonstrated capacity for critical and analytical thought, and process optimization
  • Excellent writing and grammar skills, with a critical eye for detail
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to innovate, advance projects, and conduct geoscientific research independently
  • A resourceful, positive, can-do attitude with an open-minded approach to working with diverse team-mates, partners, and regulators
  • Cultural sensitivity and curiosity to learn more about Indigenous Peoples
  • Legally permitted to work in Canada, and eligible for government support (31 years of age or less, a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or granted refugee status in Canada)

Additional preferred skills, but not required:
  • Experience with Python
  • Experience with Magnetotellurics
  • P.Geo. registered with APEGA or EGBC or a jurisdiction that offers reciprocity to APEGA and EGBC
  • Wilderness First Aid
  • Driver’s License
  • Ability to lift 55 lbs and work in rugged, heavily forested terrain in variable weather for extended periods of time (up to 6 weeks, travel, room, board, and per diem provided)
